Why Is February 22 Cat Day in Japan?

Celebrate Japan’s Cat Day on February 22!

Japan’s Cat Day was officially established in 1987 by the Cat Day Executive Committee, a group of cat-loving scholars and cultural figures, in collaboration with the Pet Food Association (formerly known as the Pet Food Industry Association).

The date February 22 (2/22) was chosen because of the way Japanese people interpret cat sounds: “Nyan (2), Nyan (2), Nyan (2)” = 2/22!

This date was actually chosen through a nationwide vote among cat lovers, and about 30% of voters picked February 22 as the best day to celebrate cats.
