If you’ve played Nioh 2, you might have heard of the term “Grace of Ninigi.” This special set bonus appears in the game, but who exactly is Ninigi no Mikoto, the deity behind it?
In Japanese mythology, Ninigi no Mikoto is a highly significant figure. He is the grandson of Amaterasu, the sun goddess, and his descent to Earth, known as Tenson Kōrin (Heavenly Descent), marks a pivotal moment in Japan’s mythological and historical foundation.
In this article, we will explore who Ninigi no Mikoto is, the myths surrounding him, and the features of “Grace of Ninigi” in Nioh 2.
Who Is Ninigi no Mikoto?

Today’s topic is Japanese deity “Ninigi”.
But there is a rumor that this deity is “an unpleasant guy.”

“Unpleasant guy”?
Wow, I can’t wait to read about him.
His Role as the Grandson of Amaterasu

Ninigi no Mikoto was sent to Earth by his grandmother, Amaterasu, to rule over the land. Originally, Amaterasu and Takagi Musubi ordered Ame no Oshihomimi (Ninigi’s father) to govern Ashihara no Nakatsukuni (the terrestrial world). However, Ame no Oshihomimi decided that his son, Ninigi no Mikoto, should take on the task instead.
Thus, Ninigi no Mikoto inherited Amaterasu’s divine will and descended to Earth.
The Heavenly Descent and the Three Sacred Treasures

Before his descent, Amaterasu entrusted Ninigi no Mikoto with the Three Sacred Treasures: the Yata no Kagami (Eight-Handed Mirror), the Ame no Murakumo no Tsurugi (Heavenly Cloud Sword, later known as Kusanagi no Tsurugi), and the Yasakani no Magatama (Curved Jewel). These treasures symbolized his legitimacy as the rightful ruler of Earth.
Ninigi no Mikoto, accompanied by several deities, made his way down but got lost at a place called Ame no Yachihoko (the Heavenly Eight-Forked Crossroads). There, he encountered a god named Sarutahiko, who guided him safely to his destination, Takachiho in Kyushu.
Additionally, during the Heavenly Descent, Ame no Uzume appeared before Sarutahiko, persuading him to lead Ninigi no Mikoto to his proper path.

Upon arriving on Earth, Ninigi no Mikoto introduced rice cultivation, making him associated not only with prosperity and bountiful harvests but also with national peace and economic development.
Marriage to Konohanasakuya-hime and the Curse of Mortality

After arriving on Earth, Ninigi no Mikoto fell in love at first sight with the beautiful Konohanasakuya-hime. He quickly proposed, and her father, Ōyamatsumi, gladly accepted.
However, Ōyamatsumi also offered his elder daughter, Iwanaga-hime, as a bride. Ninigi no Mikoto, captivated only by Konohanasakuya-hime’s beauty, rejected Iwanaga-hime.

It is said that Ninigi sent Iwanaga-hime away because she was not beautiful.

Oh…
Angered by this, Ōyamatsumi placed a curse, stating, “Iwanaga-hime would have granted you and your descendants eternal life, but since you rejected her, your lineage will now be mortal.” This curse is believed to explain why humans, as descendants of Ninigi no Mikoto, are not immortal.

Furthermore, when Konohanasakuya-hime became pregnant, Ninigi no Mikoto doubted whether the child was truly his.

Doubting his own wife?
That really makes him an unpleasant person.
In response, she declared, “If this child is yours, I shall give birth safely even in fire.” She then set fire to the birthing hut and successfully gave birth to three deities, including Hoori (Yamasachihiko) and Hoderi (Umisachihiko).

I see! Ninigi is the father of Umisachihiko and Yamasachihiko!
