Must-Visit Tourist Spots in Miyazaki

Otsuki-chan is really fascinated by Miyazaki, right? Wasn’t the creator of Tokyo Tarareba Girls from there?

That’s right—Akiko Higashimura! Reading her autobiographical manga made me want to visit Miyazaki so badly.

Then let’s learn about Miyazaki together!
Takachiho Gorge

One of the most famous attractions in Miyazaki, Takachiho Gorge features towering cliffs formed by ancient lava flows. The highlight is Manai Falls, where visitors can rent a boat and get close to the cascading waters.
Takachiho is also known as the legendary site where the grandson of the sun goddess Amaterasu descended from heaven, according to Japanese mythology. The mystical scenery and spiritual stories make it a must-visit spot.

Takachiho is one of the most famous spots—so mystical and breathtaking!
Takachiho Shrine

Located near the gorge, Takachiho Shrine has a history spanning across 1,900 years. Dedicated to Ninigi-no-Mikoto and Konohanasakuya-hime, it is believed to bring blessings for marriage and family harmony.
The famous Meoto Sugi (Married Couple Cedars) attracts couples and travelers who circle the trees three times hand-in-hand to pray for eternal love and happiness.

Takachiho Shrine is also known for its night kagura dance. I’m definitely going to see it when I visit!

Amano Iwato Shrine

Amano Yasukawara
This shrine is tied to the legendary “Cave of the Sun Goddess”, where Amaterasu is said to have hidden herself, plunging the world into darkness. The shrine worships the cave itself as its sacred object.
Nearby, you can visit Amano Yasukawara, a mystical cave where the eight million deities of Japan gathered to discuss how to bring back the light to the world.
Udo Shrine

Built dramatically inside a seaside cave on rugged cliffs facing the Pacific Ocean, Udo Shrine offers breathtaking views.

A fun tradition here is the “Undama Throwing” ritual: visitors toss small clay balls at a turtle-shaped rock in the ocean. If your stone lands in the hollow, your wishes are believed to come true.
Miyazaki’s Local Gourmet

おいしいよ!
Miyazaki Beef

World-renowned Miyazaki Beef has won multiple championships in Japan’s Wagyu Olympics. Known for its fine marbling and melt-in-your-mouth tenderness, it can be enjoyed as steak, sukiyaki, shabu-shabu, or even in gourmet burgers.

Miyazaki beef is insanely delicious—like, mind-blowingly good.
Miyazaki Mango

The premium “Egg of the Sun” (Taiyo no Tamago) mango is Miyazaki’s crown jewel. Only mangos meeting strict standards of weight and sweetness can bear this name.
Its rich sweetness and intense fragrance make it one of Japan’s most luxurious fruits, highly sought after both domestically and overseas.

Miyazaki is also famous for its mangoes. The warm climate makes it perfect for cultivation. They’re pricey but unbelievably sweet.
Chicken Nanban

Miyazaki’s soul food, Chicken Nanban, features deep-fried chicken soaked in sweet vinegar sauce and topped with creamy tartar sauce. Crispy on the outside and juicy on the inside, it’s a dish you’ll want to try more than once.

Chicken Nanban is our favorite dish as a couple! The picture on the right (with the citrus on top of the sauce) is what we made a few days ago. We didn’t have lemon, so we used sudachi instead—it gave a refreshing flavor!
Other Must-Try Foods
- Hyuganatsu Citrus: A refreshing local citrus fruit with a perfect balance of sweet and sour.
- Hiyajiru: A chilled miso-based soup poured over rice, ideal for hot summer days.
- Charcoal-Grilled Local Chicken: Smoky, savory, and packed with flavor, this is a true Miyazaki specialty.

Miyazaki is also known for sweet-and-savory meat-wrapped rice balls and a traditional confectionery called akumaki, made by cooking glutinous rice in lye water. So many delicious things to try!
