His base of operations was said to be Mount Oe in Tanba Province (modern-day Kyoto Prefecture), where he ruled as a powerful and feared figure. Shuten Doji was infamous for abducting noblewomen to use them as part of his sinister feasts.

The Story of Shuten Doji’s Defeat
Shuten Doji’s reign of terror reached its peak during the reign of Emperor Ichijo, when noblewomen began disappearing from Kyoto. The renowned onmyoji (court sorcerer) Abe no Seimei discovered through divination that the culprit behind these abductions was none other than Shuten Doji, hiding in Mount Oe.
The Heroes Assemble
To put an end to this menace, Minamoto no Yorimitsu (Raiko), a famous samurai, gathered a team of brave warriors. This team included his Four Heavenly Kings:
- Watanabe no Tsuna
- Sakata no Kintoki
- Usui Sadamitsu
- Urabe no Suetake
Additionally, Fujiwara no Yasumasa, another skilled warrior, joined the group.
The Disguise Plan
To infiltrate Shuten Doji’s stronghold, the group disguised themselves as wandering yamabushi (mountain monks). When they encountered Shuten Doji’s minions along the way, the oni grew suspicious of the strangers. However, Yorimitsu and his team managed to gain their trust by performing a dance and claiming they were harmless travelers who had lost their way.
The Poison Sake Trick
During the feast hosted by Shuten Doji, Yorimitsu offered the demon a special brew known as Shinpen Kidoku-shu—a sake laced with a powerful poison. Trusting the disguised warriors, Shuten Doji and his followers drank deeply and soon fell into a deep sleep. Seizing the opportunity, Yorimitsu and his companions donned their armor and prepared for battle.
The Final Battle
While Shuten Doji slept, Yorimitsu used his legendary blade Dojigiri Yasutsuna to sever the demon’s head. But even after being decapitated, Shuten Doji’s head continued to attack!
Shuten Doji is really strong…
With the help of his loyal Four Heavenly Kings, Yorimitsu was able to fend off the monstrous head and finally defeat the yokai. The abducted noblewomen were safely rescued, and peace was restored to Kyoto.
